Introduction to Astronomy  

Lecture: 54 contact hours

Departmental Recommendation: Eligibility for college level English and Mathematics based on the SBVC Guided-Self Placement process.

This course introduces fundamental concepts of astronomy, including the Solar System, stars, supernovae, galaxies, black holes, and the expanding universe. Students learn how to study the cosmos and what the latest discoveries reveal about the origins and fate of the universe. (Formerly ASTRON 120)

ASTR C1001L  1 Unit  
Introduction to Astronomy Lab  

Lab: 54 contact hours

Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in ASTR C1001 or other locally approved astronomy lecture course.

This laboratory course reinforces fundamental principles and concepts of astronomy by applying the scientific method through experiments, observations, and/or simulations. (Formerly ASTRON 125)

ASTR 222  1-3 Units  
Independent Study in Astronomy  

DIR: 54 contact hours

Prerequisite: ASTR C1001

Departmental Recommendation: Eligibility for college level English based on the SBVC Guided-Self Placement process.

Students with previous course work in Astronomy may do assigned projects involving research and analysis of selected topics. This independent study is for students who are interested in furthering their knowledge of Astronomy. Prior to registration, a written contract must be prepared jointly by the instructor and the student. (Formerly ASTRON 222)
